Naomi Sims - First African Model

She became one of the first successful black models while still in her teens, and achieved worldwide recognition from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, appearing on the covers of prestigious fashion and popular magazines. The New York Times wrote that "appearance as the first black model on the cover of Ladies' Home Journal in November 1968 was a consummate moment of the Black is Beautiful movement"^[1]^[6]. She also appeared on the cover of the October 17, 1969 issue of Life magazine.^[7]

Sims decided to go into the beauty business for herself after modelling. In 1973, she retired from modeling to start her own business which created a successful wig collection fashioned after the texture of straightened black hair. It eventually expanded "into a multimillion-dollar beauty empire and at least five books on modeling and beauty."^[1]

She authored several books on modeling, health, and beauty, including All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman, How to Be a Top Model and All About Success for the Black Woman, as well as an advice column for teenage girls in Right On! magazine.

Fernmitchell states on their website, "Naomi Sims, one of the top African-American businesswomen in the United States, began her career as the first black supermodel. According to Essence magazine, 'Never had a model so dark-skinned received so much exposure, praise, and professional prestige.'" The site continues saying,

Struggled to Begin Modeling Career
At 5'10", with dark skin, Sims had not been considered particularly attractive as a teenager. "Black wasn't beautiful then," she said in Black Enterprise. "The darker your skin, the less good-looking you were considered; and I was too tall, and too skinny." In the wake of the civil rights movement and the Black Power movement, however, the idea that only light-skinned women were attractive was being called into question.

Sims began college after winning a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, while also taking night classes in psychology at New York University. Her early attempts to get modeling work through established agencies were frustrated by racial prejudice, with some agencies telling her that her skin was too dark. Her first career breakthrough came after she decided to sidestep the agencies and go directly to fashion photographers and Gosta Peterson, a photographer for The New York Times, agreed to photograph her for the cover of the paper's August 1967 fashion supplement^[4].

Despite this breakthrough, Sims still found it difficult to get work, so she approached Wilhelmina Cooper, a former model who was starting her own agency, saying that she would send out copies of theTimes supplement to advertising agencies, attaching Cooper's telephone number, and that Cooper's agency would get a commission if Naomi received any work. Within a year Sims was earning US$1000 a week. The key breakthrough came when she was selected for a national television campaign for AT&T, wearing clothes by designer Bill Blass. In 1968 Sims told Ladies' Home Journal:

"It helped me more than anything else because it showed my face. After it was aired, people wanted to find out about me and use me."^[5]

Hundreds of models visited the only consultancy for artists, The Artist Advice with questions about their modeling career. As a result, the owner Jennifer Delano wrote early 2009 the first manual that is not about her own career, but totally focuses on the new generation models: "Getting there as ... a model! The route ....... for your successful start as a model'

The book is based on a roadmap. Written in simple language the book explains what you can do beside working for a top management. The book focuses on the 98% models that won't get the chance to work international. It explains how to work, how to handle the industry and to arrange a fee for your work. The book also provided information about working areas close to modelling like acting, to present and the right addresses.

Getting there as... a model! Is a dutch book written by Jennifer Delano with the name 'Bereik je doelen als... Model!' based on the theory that PR is the key to success. After finding a publisher in the USA it will be available in English.

Jennifer Delano is the owner of The Artist Advice and JenJenPR. Besides providing training, she brought thousands of artists successful to work in the modelling / acting industry. Liz has just returned from LA, where she has signed to star as "Alice" in the Steampunk fantasy "The Road to Xibalba", an all-CGI adventure romance with Mayan undertones for which she will become a new sexy type of "toon" in a Victorian Sci-Fi world. and has also committed to starring in the new film The Operative: Red Dawn. Liz is a warm welsh tv presenter/ actress (BBC, ITV, ITV 1 Wales, Sky) and currently presents QuizCall on Channel 5 every Saturday night. The former Miss Great Britain is also the face of PEARL DROPS Replenishing whites toothpaste worldwide, the tv commercial has recently gone to 5 other countries as well as the UK. Catch Lizs 4 part series on FashionTV following her as she shoots her new international campaign as the face of 'Dream' Perfume by french couture designer Rachel Elbaz. Also look out for her image all across London last winter. Liz will adorn billboards, buses, tv in the UK, Paris, Moscow, Dubai with 'Dream'.

" Philippe Laurent is a plastic artist, musicien and designer.
Graphic codes or digital codes, plastic arts or music, the approach of Philippe Laurent is a research on the perception of the signs and the symbols.
Multi-media artist, he has always been opened to new technologies, whether it is to compose its musical works or to complete its graphic work. His cross disciplinaries shows in France and Germany in the Nineties landmarked in the design of complex works mixing various advanced techniques.
His paintings, illusions of calligraphies on monochromic funds, are a question opened on the relationship between signs and meanings. Philippe Laurent develops ideograms halfway between figuration and abstraction, while endeavouring never repeating the same figure twice, like a writing of another continent or of an original language, a code which would have preceded all the other languages and which would have been lost.
This game on ambiguity asks the fundamental question of the ontological statute of the text in our western societies.
Philippe Laurent comes from a long personal study on the shape of the initiatory symbols and the letters to lead to sublimes alphabets esoteric. "

]]> I met Nilva Campedelli at Gloria, in a sophisticated atmosphere from the 80's night clubs, modern ambient of artists and fashionistas, where they do not contain in wear psychedelic garments with prints of animals and lots of gilded lurex, gold & silver ornaments (why not mixed) and accessories with influence of all the times combined in a brilliant way for some and shocking for others.

Boys wear make-up, dark eyes. Girls wear panama hats and sweet helmets, cherry lips inspired on 20's, among others, many others ornaments which shows the mark of their style and confidence.

Club Gloria is placed in one of the most traditional points of São Paulo where originally they settled the Italian immigrants about 1878, the Famous "Bairro do Bixiga."

In this place that after being a church, it worked as one of the underground theaters farthest commented in town , and where today in some occasions one can find innovation and creativity, but Gloria seems to be one of the most Avant-garde places

of the Capital.

Nilva is part of this setting, adorable as person and brilliant artist with a startling background, she tells me a little of her path where now she returned with her work in accessories design inspired by selected sources as it could not be different, because of her good taste and origins, Nilva Campedelli was born in São Paulo, where she lives, Av.Paulista, best postcard of it. Back to the action since beginning of 2008.Short time

Formed in Plastic arts and Fashion, she followed the path permeated by the change among those two modalities. In her portfolio we can find an entire fan of varieties that goes from fashion accessories design and manufacture to theater and short film costume design, creation of images and styling of photo shoots and fashion shows.

She also develops serialize of objects - contemporary assemblages, Baroque hybrid composed of wood, metal and fabric.

Her connection with the fashion comes from her lives to tend infancy, always guided by her maternal grandmother - an eminent embroiderer and designer - and goes to her great-grandfather, maternal also - that worked the wood and the metal. Nilva belongs the fourth generation of the family of Portuguese artisans, and thanks to that, their creations plows known by her delicate manual work, accompanied of the refinement in the choice of the materials, which don't need obligatorily be luxurious, but always elegant, seductive, soft and the most natural possible, checking them sensorial qualities.

Of an aesthetic point of view, one of their main characteristics is the mixture of materials disappearance incompatible with dissonant tendencies, like she did in her last collection - the happy, but unlikely marriage between the punk movement and the art Brazilian feather...

Nilva is also a collector, and in approximately 20 years of research she got to gather an amazing and anthology collection of rare objects from where it become great part of her inspiration.

Of this operation, that consists to mix current materials and old techniques - that plows in disappearance roads - the artist creates the private universe, transforming all those elements in contemporary productions, wrapped up in the mystery air and of seduction.

Nilva is back, after experienced in many parts of the world she could feed her talent, and now she is back to stay!

Located at Avenida Paulista, the Art & Fashion Fair on Sunday morning is a great option and reason to get out of bed soon...populated by antiques and lookalikes alternative shops...
Not only that but get a walk in Avenida Paulista is a classic, something that I feel needed, is the most famous postcard from this enormous populated town...love it

I know it could seem a difficult mission for some but I keep doing and and it is not so bad.
Art admirer I can easily agree and meet few of the most adorable manifest
of the stuff, passing by the MASP (museo de art de Sao Paulo) to the other side of the road where you can get the most eclectic craft from south America...feel like a tourist in my own country, and it is fantastic!

Another called religious stop is in the corner of Haddock Lobo in a tropical exotic fruit kiosk, you can choose, eat i use to call also a type of art,there you can just use what you want and raise your own super mix...
Crossing back to the center is there now one of the most charming Brazilian "camden town"
exposing all the alternative design in clothing...accessory and decoration...you can also create your own...you can also raise your own board or collage...sticks and why not paint...
   Also dress,i love mix, and it is the best place to get it,eclectic,50s 60s 70s 80s... belts,shirts,pants...superimpose...just play...easy, and the best,really good accessible prices,manufactured and unique,most of the times.
   After get in one of the most glam European style down to Oscar Freire,nice options for lunch and all the most popular brands from Brazil and out...but this ride better talk another time...

Custo Barcelona Show In His Hometown

The show took place in beautiful gotic cathedral from 13 century.

It was build on the highest point of Plug del Castel, City of Lleida in Spain.

Since Lleida is Custo's hometown he really tried hard to put up a good show.

I my opinion, he did a great job!

The make up was very light and simple. Just a bit of foundation, mascara, a touch of blush and some lip-gloss.

Clothes were as colorful as one spring summer collection should be. Crazy trippy patterns were all over the clothes, shining on the light with glitter. I was very impressed with his creativity.

On this picture models are standing in line up. We are all dolled up and ready to go out on the most longest runaway I had ever walked.

New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Kick-off Party at Saks 5th Ave.

Fashionistas in the city ushered in fashion week with the Mercedes-Benz kick-off party at Saks. This years theme commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. In keeping with the theme, designers showcased their talents by creating their own interpretations of the ruby slippers. Dorothy would have loved to click her heels in Swarovski encrusted stilettos.
